Confined spaces and PPE

Update 13.01.26

Confined spaces and their multiple risks

Confined spaces encompass a variety of environments that regularly require repair, cleaning or maintenance operations.

These include, for example, water treatment facilities (sewers, basins, tanks), silos or other industrial reservoirs for cement, cereals or pharmaceutical products such as gelatine.

These confined spaces expose workers to a variety of risks related to

  • falls from height, first and foremost
  • humidity, which causes slipping
  • poor lighting
  • temperature variations
  • the presence of toxic gases
  • the risk of impact with walls etc.

"In the event of an incident, the golden rule of safety stipulates that the person remaining on the surface must never descend to provide assistance, but must be able to evacuate the victim from the top of the installation using appropriate equipment," says Cécilia Lemoine, fall protection solutions expert at Delta Plus.

Delta Plus' integrated solution for confined spaces

Delta Plus develops and manufactures a complete solution that specifically meets the requirements of confined spaces

"Harnesses and retractors are manufactured in our Delta Plus factories. This allows us to control every step of the process to ensure consistent quality and perfect compatibility between components" explains Cécilia Lemoine.

A solution based on the ABC principle

Element A - Body support: the harness for confined spaces

The Delta Plus harness for confined spaces complies with standard EN 361 and includes a back extension strap to facilitate the evacuation of the operator in the event of a problem.

Element B - Fall arrest: The self-retracting lanyard

The Delta Plus retractor is certified for 150 kg and incorporates a patented braking system. This technology guarantees a minimum stopping distance and maximum energy absorption, thereby reducing the force of impact on the user.

In addition to fall protection, this reel also complies with standard EN 1496 for rescue by ascent or descent, allowing evacuation from the surface. This dual certification adds real value to this reel model, thanks to its rescue and recovery option.

Element C - Anchorage: The tripod

The tripod is a temporary mobile anchor. Made of aluminium for lightness and strength, it is available in two versions: 2 metres and 3 metres high.

"Its certification for 3 people (resistance up to 20 kN, or approximately 2 tonnes) offers a guarantee of optimal safety," says Cécilia Lemoine.

The tripod allows several plates to be installed simultaneously, enabling various configurations depending on the requirements of the confined space operation: for example, a winch can be added to lower goods (tools, pipes, etc.) or the TR018 reel with the rescue option.

The evacuator can be installed directly on one of the two plates on the tripod leg (TR018 reel), or on one of the tripod head anchors in the case of the TC065 rope evacuator.

What are the risks in confined spaces?
Working in confined spaces exposes workers to various risks: falling, slipping, colliding with walls, breathing in toxic gases or accidents due to reduced visibility. It is important to use PPE that is suitable for confined environments.
What type of harness should be used for confined spaces?
Use a fall arrest harness with a dorsal attachment point that complies with standard EN 361, equipped with a recovery strap for evacuation to facilitate rescue operations. The harness must allow for prolonged suspension without dangerous compression and facilitate rescue.
What is a fall arrest and recovery device for confined spaces?
It is a device that combines a fall arrest function (fall arrest) and a recovery system (rescue of the worker). It allows a person who has fallen or is unwell to be quickly rescued without waiting for external assistance. Essential in confined spaces where evacuation is complex, it is installed on a tripod/gallows and must be manoeuvrable by the external supervisor.
