Update 10.03.25

One of Delta Plus's product development priorities is a multi-risk range: why this focus?

Yves Klinger and his team are leading the development of multi-risk product ranges at Delta Plus. With over 25 years' experience in the textile industry, Yves and his team are working to develop high-performance, comfortable garments that comply with standards.

Meet Julien Sittaro, product specialist and Yves Klinger, global product line manager.

Julien Sittaro: ‘To respond to changes in the business and the needs of end-users. Generally speaking, we're seeing a rise in certain areas of work and activity on a global scale, such as the energy, construction, petrochemical and electric car sectors.

These specific areas of activity include equally specific work zones, with risks inherent to each area.

For example, a worker on an oil rig has to move from zone A to zone B. Each zone is subject to its own specific risks, so the wearer may not be sufficiently protected when moving into zone B.

For companies, choosing multi-risk clothing is a way of ensuring that employees are protected, whatever the working environment.

Our multi-risk products are designed to meet this need to maximise protection, offering peace of mind to QHSEs, who work every day to ensure the well-being of their employees’.

Yves Klinger: ‘These macro observations and developments in these sectors are coupled with regular visits to the field, as close as possible to the workstations. The challenge for Delta Plus is to find out from the operators what needs they face in their day-to-day work, whether in terms of changes to their job and their work area, as Julien said, or in terms of their need for comfort.

To meet these new user expectations, how do you design multi-risk PPE?

Julien Sittaro: ‘First of all, we choose which portfolio of risks we want to cover: in the energy, electric car or construction sectors, there are major risks in common.

We are working to produce PPE that combines the following properties:
- fire retardant,
- electrical risk (arc flash)
- antistatic
- high visibility (colour, reflective strips)

And we can add category 1 or 2 chemical risk depending on the environment.

Yves Klinger: ‘Combining maximum protection in a single garment is a technical challenge. To achieve this, we need to mobilise :
- the intrinsic qualities of a garment - the choice of fabric, threads, buttons or zips, seams, etc. -,
- the nature of the compositions and treatments (synthetic fibres such as modacrylic (fire-retardant), carbon fibre (resistant and electrically conductive), antistatic fibre, fire-retardant treated cotton, etc.).

The result is a range of multi-risk garments, combining sweatshirts, polo shirts, work jackets, parka jackets and underwear to provide protection in a wide range of temperature and visibility conditions.

Beyond performance, the comfort of PPE is a new key factor, and soon that of design?

Julien Sittaro: ‘Our thinking starts with the end use. The priority remains protection (article on the category of protection) and compliance with current standards (article on the standard). Comfort is the other essential element, because it also has a direct influence on the way PPE is worn.

Yves Klinger: ‘In this sense, PPE needs to incorporate a new level of comfort into its design: it has to be designed to accompany movement. Design is another important factor in PPE.

This is another of the challenges we face as PPE manufacturers: innovating to meet the needs of end-users and making our products accessible to all. Multi-risk clothing is fully in line with this Delta Plus approach.
