Update 28.05.25

What is the Econote and why are you implementing this approach?

David Guiho: "We are anticipating what is known as product life cycle analysis, which will soon be mandatory for all products on the European market. This analysis makes it possible to assess the environmental impact of a product from the beginning to the end of its life.

The approach consists of being able to evaluate each stage - design, manufacture, transport, use and end of life - and identify the most impactful phases. The objective is to work on these different aspects in order to reduce our environmental footprint.’

Have you undertaken this approach for yourself, or for your customers?

David Guiho: " Initially, it was in line with the objectives set out in our CSR policy. We wanted to create an internal framework to help us identify the areas we needed to work on in order to reduce our impact.
However, in view of the growing demand from our partners and customers who want to use more responsible products, we wanted to have a common framework recognised by the market. That's why we collaborated with La Belle Empreinte, which offers labelling based on recognised standards.’

How will this Econote be indicated on your PPE products?

David Guiho: " For the customer, the information will be visible in the form of a score indicating the kilograms of CO2 generated by the product.

  • From 2025, 100% of our new products will be rated with The Beautiful Footprint.
  • In 2024, we trained our teams and tested the tool on 89 existing PPE.
  • Our goal is for 50% of our products to be rated by the end of 2025.

Ultimately, all manufacturers will be obliged to provide these ratings, which will enable users to make comparisons and encourage manufacturers to promote eco-design.’

Have you identified which stages in the life cycle of your PPE were particularly impactful?

David Guiho: "Contrary to popular belief, transport is not as impactful as one might think. Quickly, it was said that recycled materials should be used: in fact, optimisation should be sought by integrating recyclable materials in order to give waste management industries time to structure themselves, because the end of life of the product has an impact.
Finally, we have observed that the phases that generate the most CO2 are mainly the finishing of materials (the transition from raw material to a material ready for assembly) and the management of the end of life of the product.’

And do you already have any ideas for improvement?

David Guiho: "We are working on the issue of product end-of-life. We have launched projects with start-ups in France and the Netherlands to develop technologies for separating the different materials in a product to facilitate their recycling. This will enable us to guide our users towards treatment solutions suited to our end-of-life products.

We are also working on high-end shoes, made in Italy, which are made of more than 50% recycled materials.’

"La Belle Empreinte" approach

La Belle Empreinte supports textile brands in their ecodesign initiatives. It provides them with a calculator so that they can independently carry out simplified life cycle analyses on their products. This calculator integrates more than ten indicators (carbon footprint, pollutant emissions, water withdrawal, etc.) and operates on the basis of reference frameworks published by ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency). With the results obtained, brands can:

  • first of all, they can intervene in the stages of manufacture with the greatest impact in order to reduce their footprint,
  • they can also publish a box on each product sheet online indicating the results obtained,
  • and possibly the difference with the average impact of a similar product.
A pop-up window will also inform Internet users of the methodology used.
