Delta Plus, safety partner for wind turbine technicians

Update 06.11.24

Wind turbine maintenance: numerous associated risks

In 2023, wind power will become the 2nd largest source of electricity (Think Tank Ember) behind nuclear and hydro, overtaking gas for the first time. But maintaining wind turbines is a demanding and risky business, working at great heights and in confined spaces. In turn, it requires rigorous safety measures.

There are many risks for wind turbine maintenance technicians:

But the main risk is of course the risk of falling which can occur during :
- moving around inside the shaft of the wind turbine,
- working inside the spinner,
- climbing out onto the roof of the nacelle
- and, more rarely, during operations on the blades.

PPE and systems adapted to working at height on wind turbines

These risks require strict safety measures and reliable protective equipment and systems.

‘As a key player in the protection of workers at height, Delta Plus has developed a comprehensive range of systems and PPE tailored to the specific requirements of work on wind turbines,’ explains Albane Perret, Marketing & Communications Manager at Delta Plus Systems.

The range includes helmets, protective footwear, gloves and, above all, suitable fall arrest PPE.

‘Part of the climb up the shaft of a wind turbine is achieved by means of a lift, so users are often provided with an anchorage. The other means of access is via vertical ladders fitted with a safety rail: operators must connect their harness to this rail using a mobile fall arrest carriage (complying with standard EN353-1). When the operator works away from this rail, he must secure himself with a fall arrest lanyard and, if his balance is precarious, with an additional work positioning lanyard’, explains Bruno Lambert, Director of Alpic, the Delta Plus training organisation for workers at height.

Alpic, the Delta Plus subsidiary, expert in training for working on wind turbines

As well as equipment, a culture of safety and the implementation of good practices are essential for optimum protection of operators on wind turbines.

To provide the best possible support for its customers, Delta Plus has its own training centre: Alpic offers specialised training for work at height and rescue operations, including training dedicated to the wind energy sector.

3 main types of training are offered:

  • development and work inside the wind turbine,
  • working outside the wind turbine,
  • rescue work with a suspended victim.

‘Each of these courses includes a theoretical part, on the standards in force and the correct storage conditions for PPE. But most of the time is spent on practical exercises: technicians learn how to use PPE correctly, assess potential risks and manage emergency situations,’ explains Bruno Lambert.

These training courses can be certified by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). ‘In 2011, Delta Plus/Alpic was one of the first training organisations to obtain this international certification, which was introduced in 2010,’ explains Albane Perret.

This certification attests to the experience, high level of safety and competence of the training courses offered.
